The Cleithrum Project
Genetic Biodiversity Study

Muskellunge are highly prized by many anglers and Ontario offers some of the finest musky fishing opportunities in the world. It is importabt that management and conservation actions be implemented to ensure Ontario's muskellunge are sustained in the future. There are currently two projects underway in which Ontario anglers can assist:

The Cleithrum Project

The Cleithrum Project is the provincial repository for biological data on muskellunge and northern pike. The cleithrum is a crescent-chaped bone under the gill flap which should be removed from any fish found dead or which has been caught legalling by angling and is being kept for food or taxidermy.

Information about the fish - length, girth, weight, lake, date, etc. - should be recorded and submitted along with the cleithrum to:   Royal Ontario Museum, 100 Queen's Park Crescent, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2C6. to do this, an information package can be picked up at the nearest regional Ministry of Natural Resources Office.   ( ... more info )

Genetic Biodiversity Study

Research scientists with the Ministry of Natural Resources, in conjunction with Muskies Canada, have initiated a program to collect muskellunge tissue samples for genetic (DNA) analysis. This information will be used to identify unique genetic strains and preserve biodiversity among distinct musky populations. Ontario anglers can assist by collecting 4-5 uncleaned scales each muskellunge caught legally by angling.   ( ... more info )

Samples can bemailed to:   Dr. Chris Wilson, Science Complex, Trent University, 1600 West Bank Drive, Peterborough, Ontario, K9J 8N8
