The molecular techniques which have gained widespread publicity in forensic science now represent leading-edge science in fisheries management. Through the use of high-resolution DNA markers, biologists may now address questions relevant to our understanding of muskellunge populations. |
| |
| Muskies Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources are presently collaborating on two projects involving genetic analyses of muskellunge populations in Ontario. DNA is extracted from scale samples submitted by anglers. Ony a few scales from each fish are required and the scales can be removed in seconds, causing no harm to the fish. The success of these projects depends
on a high participation rate among anglers. ( ... more info ) |
